OpenLabs promoted by OpenLabs Ghana has launched a modern certification programme in robotics that will enable JHS students to build smart devices using IoT. This programme conforms with the government’s vision to adopt new technology for overall sustainable growth.
In a statement, OpenLabs Ghana officials said this certificate course was primarily designed for JHS students so that they adapt early.
“IoT business models will disrupt every industry that involves electronics or equipment over the next decade. Keeping this possibility in mind, we decided that each student must complete at least five projects before they get the certificate,” said Sujith Jayaprakash, Director and Business Head of OpenLabs.

These projects are:
- A Bluetooth Controlled Car Using Arduino,
- An Obstacle Detector using Arduino Ultrasonic Sensor Project,
- Turning on a Light with Ultrasonic Motion Detection,
- PI sensing door alarm, and
- Light Sensing Lamps
She added that OpenLabs would use an innovative teaching method called PBL (Project Based Learning) in which students will learn by engaging with real-world problems, collaboration and application, instead of just memorising classroom theories.
This robotics programme is among four brand new courses launched this year by OpenLabs which are specially designed for JHS and SHS graduates to add up a skill before they progress to their next academic milestone. The other three certifications are in MS-Office 2016, Hardware and Networking. JHS as well as SHS students are qualified to apply for any/all of these courses.
“Ghana cannot continue to rely on only her natural resources to achieve and sustain economic growth and development,” Vice President Dr Bawumia had said in a gathering of Ghanaian technology experts in Silicon Valley.
Vodafone Ghana’s CEO Patricia Obo-Nai had also recently pointed out that the youth must leverage technology to stay relevant. “Now, more than ever, employers require employees to be familiar with the ever-growing number of technologies they implement. They need critical thinkers, problem solvers, and creative people to make sure they succeed in the future of technology and thus being knowledgeable in STEM-related courses helps in that aspect of development,” she had said at a youth conference.
